If I asked you to guess what 20 oz drink has 75 grams of sugar, and 350 calories, most of you might think soda or milkshake, right?  But I’m talking about a smoothie from a popular chain, Smoothie King.  My brother and several friends of mine frequently stop there for an afternoon snack, or a post workout drink.  Smoothies seem so healthy, but don’t be fooled, not all smoothies are good for you!  The Angel Food Smoothie is listed on the Trim Down menu at Smoothie King, but not much about 75 grams of sugar in one drink is going to trim you down.  Not to mention it has dairy milk, soy protein, and sugar added.

You know I couldn’t resist remaking this smoothie.  I used unsweetened almond milk, whole strawberries (greens included), a frozen banana, vanilla extract, and honey.  My version has 29 grams of sugar, all from natural sources, and just over 200 calories.  Then you are welcome to add in whatever extras you want, like spinach, chia seeds, protein powder, bee pollen, or maca powder.  You could even replace the honey with a couple drops of liquid stevia, if you are really watching your sugar intake.  This is a super tasty, sweet smoothie that everyone will enjoy!

Happy Smoothie Saturday!

Why do fast food chains keep dumping so much sugar in their smoothies? Why can’t they just let the ingredients do the talking. Oh well to each his own, awesome modification to your smoothie to make it more health friendly.

It’s the same game under a different name. Make the product appeal to the taste buds with plenty of sugar or salt and sell, sell, sell. I call it Bait and switch-bait the consumer with “health benefit” marketing buzz words and switch to the same known unhealthy ingredients. Yes, profit and greed knows no boundaries; not even playing the “healthy for you” game. So protect yourself and read, read, read. Oh yes, read blogs like this one and remember we can make it unprofitable to play these games if we stop buying what we know to be unhealthy.
