Pineapple Ginger Lime Smoothie


This week I noticed turmeric at the grocery store for the first time while getting more ginger.  I’m sure they have it all the time but it’s not something I’ve ever gone looking for.  I wasn’t exactly looking for it this week but I wasn’t passing it up after all I’ve read about it recently.  Turmeric has been in the headlines for it’s healing properties, including reducing cancer tumors, helping Alzheimer’s and asthma, and and liver detoxification.  Ironic timing since two friends are entering challenging weeks while fighting cancer, and a friend’s parent was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

This smoothie should be nicknamed the “Healing Smoothie” since all the ingredients have proven to be powerful healers.  Greens, banana, ginger, and turmeric, have all shown to help asthma, and the combination of anti-inflammatory spices and vitamin C from the citrus and pineapple is a powerful combination that could potentially help everything from the common cold to cancer.

I added just a little turmeric, slightly larger than a pea size amount, which added just a little extra flavor and spice, but the ginger and pineapple really stand out here.  This smoothie was surprisingly tasty with just the right balance of sweet and spicy.  I loved it, and will be making this one often, but I was really surprised when my two year old liked it!  It’s always a bonus when the kids love it, too.

Recipe: Smoothie

Serves: 2
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 2 tbsp fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1 cup of greens (spinach or kale)
  • 1 1/2 cups pineapple chunks
  • 1/2 large frozen banana
  • 1/4 tsp fresh ginger
  • 1/8 tsp fresh turmeric
  • 4 ice cubes
  1. Add all the ingredients to a blender
  2. Start on low speed slowly increasing to high
  3. Blend until smooth, about 1 minute

Thanks Victoria for sharing this recipe! Love ginger and turmeric. :) I also enjoy making smoothie out of kale and/or spinach. But then, I still add honey to it.

Could you make this using dried turmeric instead? Would it be the same amount?

Oh my, this is delish! I’m trying to add more green into my shakes/smoothies for lunch and what a treat this was. It’s my favorite green shake! I added hemp, flax, chia and coconut oil since the was my lunch. Thanks for the great recipe! I’m looking forward to trying more recipes from The Green Plate.!

I just made this smoothie and it is AMAZING, I didn’t have turmeric so added extra ginger and the combination of the citrus with the ginger is so refreshing.
