Two things I love in the winter — sitting by the fireplace and hot chocolate. I would add snow to the list but in Atlanta we don’t get snow, just ice. I went out this morning with my running group for a 10 mile run and it was chilly and wet out. All I could think about after finishing was getting home to make hot chocolate and sit by the fireplace. Today is Smoothie Saturday so I thought, why do I always make hot chocolate on the stovetop when my blender could do it for me? Why haven’t I thought of this before? So today I tried it and I can say without a doubt I will not be making hot chocolate on the stovetop anymore! One thing I love about my vitamix blender is if you blend long enough it will warm whatever is in there. It’s great for making soups, sauces, and now hot chocolate! I could enjoy this smoothie cold or leave it in for a couple minutes and enjoy it warm. This recipe is about as easy as it gets, and as healthy as it gets for hot chocolate. And for all the runners out there who like chocolate milk after a long run, this would be a great alternative. Enjoy and Happy Smoothie Saturday!
| Hot Chocolate Green Smoothie |
- 1 cup vanilla coconut milk
- 2 tbsp vanilla coconut creamer
- 1 banana
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder (I used Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Cocoa Powder)
- 1/2 cup spinach
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp agave, or honey
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- handful of ice for a cold smoothie
- Add all the ingredients to a blender
- Start on a low speed and increase to high
- Blend until smooth, about 1 min
Please be sure to read the labels on creamers. Most are loaded with artificial ingredients, and partially hydrogenated oils. If you cannot find vanilla coconut creamer try to find one with natural ingredients.

What do you think about so delicious vanilla coconut creamer?
I like it! I keep it at the house for cooking or if anyone needs it for coffee.
My husband is allergic to coconut. What would you suggest as an alternative? I just found your website tonight. Thank you for all you do.
Hi Bridget,
I’m so glad you found us! You could use almond milk (or dairy if you prefer). I’m not sure if there is an almond creamer alternative, but there you could use a natural dairy creamer (check to make sure it doesn’t have partially hydrogenated oils). The cream helps sweeten it, so you could always skip it all together and add a little more sweetener.
Enjoy! -Victoria
