Fig & Blueberry {not so green} Green Smoothie

Fig & Blueberry {not so green} Green Smoothie

This smoothie is so amazing and different from the others — I just can’t get enough.  It is so sweet, has a really creamy and thick texture from the figs and frozen banana, and I love how the blueberries and figs cover up the greens I added.  I always add a little more than 1 cup of greens to my green smoothies, but you can’t tell at all in this one!  The kids will never know!!  Super sweet, super healthy, extra thick and creamy…this is a winner in my book!

I used some of the leftover honey roasted figs to make this, but you could use raw figs and add a some honey instead.  All these beautiful figs at the store and the yummy, health recipes make me want a fig tree in my yard!

Enjoy!

Do you know if there is any nutritional value in the seeds of
Blueberries? When I make smoothies like this I use my juicer
to juice the berries and remove seed then add it to the smoothie
Don’t like picking seeds out of my teeth but don’t know if I am
Missing the most valuable parts!

When you juice the blueberries you remove the fiber, but as far as I know you are not removing any vitamins or minerals.

Your blender may not be strong enough. I use a Vitamix, which is an expensive blender, but well worth the investment! Someone mentioned to me that she adds the greens and liquid to a food processor first to help break down the greens, and then adds everything to the blender. It seems like a lot of work to me, but she said it works for her.
I have heard good things about the NutriBullet, which is a small high powered blender, and about a quarter of the price of a Vitamix. http://www.nutribullet.com/
Frozen bananas, or a little avocado make smoothies extra thick and smooth, so I try to use at least one of those in each smoothie.
Hope this helps you! Have a great day.

I used to have the same problem with chunky greens! I wish I could afford a Blend-Tec or Vitamix(someday!)……..I’ve found that adding the greens and whatever liquid you are using (almond milk in this case) first and run the blender for about 5 minutes even my crappy $20 blender will get everything pretty smooth. Smooth enough that my picky-non-greens-eating boyfriend even likes them! Just keep a close eye not to burn up your blender motor!

PS. I can’t wait to try this recipe!!! I add blueberries but I’ve never tried Figs!

hey juliet, the idea of a smoothie is to really add in fiber as well as the vitamins and mins to your diet. the idea in juicing is to leave out the fiber-so juicing berries to add to a smoothie seems to defy the point of a smoothie-just a thought. if your blender is strong enough you should be able to really notice those seeds..and drinking it from a straw would help, too!
