GREEN PLATE RULE

Green Plate Rule

The goal of the Green Plate Rule is to help reverse the growing number of children and adults with obesity, diabetes, and other health related problems through a healthy diet. We can do this through awareness of what is in food, how to prepare simple and healthy meals, and getting children involved in the kitchen.

The numbers are all over the news. Nearly one in three American children are obese or overweight, and one in three of all Americans are obese. So it is no surprise when I say heart disease is the number 1 killer in America. Also no surprise cancer is the number 2 killer since many forms of cancer are linked to obesity. Heart disease and cancer run in my family and I do not want to watch it take another life. I care and I want to make in difference, not just for my family but also for everyone willing to make some changes.

Growing up, my parents, like many others, had the clean plate rule. That can be good for kids if they are getting healthy meals and not overeating.  Now that I have my own children, I am rethinking the meaning of the clean plate rule. While I still want my girls to eat the food I give them, my primary focus is now to ensure the food on their plate provides the nutrition they need to grow and develop.  And that is how I came up with the name “Green Plate Rule”.

Who’s Writing the Blog:

Victoria (creator of GPR) – I’m a mom with two toddler girls trying to find the most simple and nutritious recipes to give them!  My recipes are simple, quick, and usually involve just a few ingredients and steps. I enjoy making homemade juices, and love smoothies! I have a mostly vegan diet and recently decided gluten-free works best for us. I also share healthy school lunch ideas, and talk about health, nutrition, and the importance of reading labels at the grocery store.

Chef Amy – A talented chef who works as a personal chef, and is a mother of three children. She shares a wide variety of delicious and healthy recipes, chef tips, homemade juice recipes, smoothies, and health and nutrition information. She also shares school lunch ideas, and the importance of reading labels at the store.

We have been friends for many years and have always shared the same passion to promote health. On November 9th, 2011, I (Victoria) hit the “Publish” button for the first time and have been working hard to make Green Plate Rule a place for you to find recipes, nutritional information, and to be inspired.

Thank you for joining us!

Free Fridays – We will feature a recipe or product that is gluten-free.

Smoothie Saturdays – Every Saturday is dedicated to smoothie recipes. I am a big fan of my Vita-Mix blender and use it everyday. Smoothies are a great way to get lots of great nutrition and extra fruits and vegetables into our bodies. Give them a try! I think you will be a fan too.
